states today. meanwhile, republicans are going ugly. mitt romney is trying everything he can to shake up the race. that is the real story of what is going on in the campaign now. romney's forces are responding to new polls showing president obama leading in swing states. up by six in iowa, up by five in ohio, and ahead in other key states, including new hampshire, be virginia, florida, wisconsin, colorado, and nevada. and today, a major endorsement coming from new york city's independent mayor michael bloomberg. no question, this is a close race but today in wisconsin the president went after one of the key points in governor romney's closing argument to voters. >> the closing weeks of this campaign, governor romney has been using all his talents as a salesman to dress up these very same policies that failed our country so badly. and he is offering them change. he's saying he's the candidate of change. well, let me tell you, wisconsin, we know what change looks like. and what the governor is offering sure ain't change. >> it sure ain't change. but governor romney is good at changing on e

romney has 47.3% the new york times 538 blog says that if the election were held today, the president would win 303 electoral votes and romney would win 235. 270 are needed to win the white house. the times blog gives the president an 81% chance of winning the election. romney has a 19% chance. and as of tonight, 25 million people have already voted but long lines are creating a serious situation in some parts of florida. yes, florida all over again. some people are waiting three hours or more to vote and we will be asking why governor rick scott in florida is refusing to extend hours as his predecessors have done. but we start with tonight's lead. the closer. just four days to go and president obama is sprinting to the finish line with a passionate pitch to ohio voters and he's doing so by dismantling governor romney's rationale in this race one line of the obama argument, i am the guy you know. >> after four years as president, you know me. you may not agree with every decision i've made, you may be frustrated sometimes at the pace of change, but you know that i say what i mean and

of polling for mitt romney, top staffers held a conference call with reporters in which they enumerated all their reasons why they see mitt romney as a shoo-in to beat the president on tuesday despite all the latest battleground state polling. they suggested that their secret sauce that is more important than the polling is that mr. romney is winning independents. so there. romney has this thing in the bag. karl rove who is running the biggest dark money operation for the republicans this year, and therefore is as influential as ever, mr. rove took to "the wall street journal" this week to patiently explain to all these people who don't understand that these numbers that look so bad for mr. romney do not matter, or they're wrong. or they're wrong and they don't matter. because he says democrats are not winning early voting by enough. and he says the polls make assumptions about turnout that he describes as absurd. it also describes some intangible stuff that makes him believe mitt romney is going to win, things like crowd size and closing arguments. according to him, all of that stuff toget

since hurricane sandy hit. mitt romney has an event starting any minute now in roanoke, virginia. and we'll wait to see today's tone on the campaign trail, but it's been noticeably softer from romney since the storm. now, we continue to see absolutely devastating pictures from sandy. 74 people are now dead. 5 million still without power. this morning, president obama was briefed again on the situation by fema officials. yesterday, he spent four hours touring the damage and meeting with people in new jersey. in an emotional moment, a marina owner came to him in tears. he promised her she's going to get the help she needs. >> we are with here for you. and we will not forget. we will follow up to make sure that you get all the help that you need until you've rebuilt. >> well, it's unprecedented timing. this is all happening just five days before the election. the latest round of nbc news wall street journal polls show the president leading in iowa, wisconsin, and new hampshire. but it is still very close. let me bring in washington post columnist dana millbank and molly ball. good morning.
